What Is Earwax and Why Does It Cause Problems?

Earwax (cerumen) is produced naturally in the ear canal to protect and clean the ears. In most people, earwax moves out of the ear naturally. But for some, it builds up leading to:

  • Blocked or full sensation in the ears
  • Temporary hearing loss
  • Itching or earache
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Dizziness or balance problems

These symptoms can impact your comfort, hearing, and confidence.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

At your first visit, our team will:

  • Welcome you to our clinic and review your ear and health history
  • Examine your ears using magnification and advanced tools
  • Recommend the most suitable wax removal technique:
    • Ear microsuction: gentle suction to safely remove wax, aided by clinical-grade microscopes
    • Ear irrigation: a controlled jet of warm water is used to gently flush out softer wax
    • Manual instrumentation: used for wax near the ear entrance
  • Perform a Hear Screen test: this will help us determine your hearing levels and if you require further treatment or assessment.

If no treatment is needed, or the wax cannot be safely removed right away, we may recommend ear drops and a complementary follow-up visit.
