Earwax Build Up and Causes

Understanding why earwax accumulates and how to manage it safely

Earwax build up is one of the most common reasons people experience blocked ears, muffled hearing and discomfort. Although earwax plays an important protective role, too much of it can lead to symptoms that affect daily life. This page explains what earwax is, why it becomes impacted and when to seek professional care.

If you are experiencing symptoms now, you can book a clinical earwax removal appointment at one of our dedicated House of Hearing clinics across the UK.

What is earwax

Earwax, or cerumen, is produced naturally by glands in the ear canal. It helps:

  • Protect the skin inside the ear
  • Trap dust and small particles
  • Prevent dryness and irritation
  • Support the natural cleaning process of the ear

The ear is usually self-cleaning. As you move your jaw, old wax is encouraged to migrate towards the outer ear where it naturally flakes away. Problems arise when this process is disrupted.

What causes earwax to build up

Earwax accumulation can happen for several reasons. Some of the most common include:

1. Narrow or twisted ear canals
Some people naturally have smaller or more curved ear canals, which make it harder for earwax to move out on its own.

2. Genetics
You may simply produce more earwax than others. The consistency of your earwax can also be inherited.
